Come join some of the friendliest people in our beautiful Midwest community, situated in the heart of Kansas at the junction of three major state highways and just 40 miles south of I-70. Because of our position as a county seat and a service community for thousands of highway travelers, we get to enjoy numerous restaurants and retail stores that cannot always be supported in other communities our size. It’s the perfect balance of a safe and quiet small town life with the amenities of a larger city.

A revitalized downtown area features numerous boutiques, a new 6-screen cinema, an historic theatre, a wine cellar featuring fresh products made at a local winery, and much more. Jack Kilby Square is in the center of downtown, featuring an outdoor bandshell for live music in the summer, ice skating in the winter, and choreographed light displays during the holidays. Other seasonal amenities include picnic areas, a fishing lake, lighted softball and baseball diamonds, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a BMX bike park, a skate board park, a water park and swimming pool, indoor skating rink, and numerous parks with playgrounds and open spaces for family gatherings. One of our parks even features a renowned local zoo that is open daily with free admission.

Nature is a huge tourist attraction in our region, with hunters and bird watchers traveling from all over the Midwest to visit Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira Wildlife Refuge. Outside of nature, there are several other drivers for our economic base such as oil and energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and education. One of the largest community colleges in Kansas is seated here in Great Bend, with satellite campuses around the State. Their campus brings lots of extra opportunities to enjoy fine arts and entertainment, with theatre, vocal and instrumental music, a fine art gallery, and more.

Our public school district features five elementary schools, a middle school for seventh and eighth grade students, and a high school for ninth through twelfth grade students. We are a 5A school district, with ample opportunities for extracurricular activities such as competitive sports, music and theatre, and service clubs. For those interested in private school offerings, Great Bend has two private education options with a catholic school for students in preschool through sixth grade and a non-denominational Christian school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Great Bend’s quality of life is what separates us from other communities. U.S. News and World Report even recognized Great Bend as a “Best Places” city due to our low cost of living and access to diverse amenities.
