3D mammography, which provides more detail than a traditional mammogram, takes multiple images, or X-rays, of breast tissue to recreate a 3-dimensional picture of the breast. The Food and Drug Administration-approved technology is considered the most significant improvement in mammography in the past 30 years.
 

Screenings are quick and normally take only 10 to 15 minutes.
 

3D mammography can detect 20-65% more invasive cancers than a traditional mammogram. All women should receive their first routine screening mammogram at age 40 as recommended by the American College of Radiology, then have a mammogram every year. 3D mammograms make it possible for radiologists to detect the difference between cancerous and noncancerous breast tissue, especially in women with dense breasts.
